While close to two-thirds of India’s population is exposed to extreme flood events, only a third of these individuals are covered by flood early warning systems (EWSs), according to a new report. The report also found that while 12 states were highly exposed to extreme flood events, only three of these have a high availability of such systems while eight have low availability, “indicating a gap in the planning for installing flood monitoring and forecasting stations”.
